Deforestasi Mengancam Kehidupan Satwa Endemik

Hutan di Pulau Jawa terus terancam deforestasi. Hal ini dinilai akan mengancam kehidupan masyarakat dan kelestarian satwa endemik Jawa.

Berdasarkan data laju deforestasi (kerusakan hutan) Departemen Kehutanan periode 2003-2006, diketahui laju deforestasi di Pulau Jawa sebesar 2.500 hektar per tahun (0,2 persen) dari total deforestasi di Indonesia. Laju deforestasi di Indonesia sebesar 1,17 juta hektar per tahun.

Profauna mengajak masyarakat menyadari bahwa kondisi hutan di Pulau Jawa sangat terancam. ”Tanggung jawab pelestarian bukan hanya pada pemerintah, melainkan juga masyarakat secara luas,” kata juru kampanye hutan Profauna, Radius Nursidi, Senin (22/2) di Malang, Jawa Timur.

Terkait hal itu, Profauna menggelar unjuk rasa di Jalan Simpang Balapan, Kota Malang. Sejumlah anggota Profauna berdiri bagai pohon, berjajar menghadap jalan sambil membawa tulisan ”Save Forests in Java”.

”Rata-rata deforestasi hutan terjadi karena perambahan untuk ladang atau dijadikan lokasi pabrik. Hal ini menyebabkan bencana banjir atau tanah longsor, seperti yang terjadi di Pujon dan Cangar (Malang),” katanya.

Dampak buruk lain akibat kerusakan hutan adalah terancamnya kelestarian satwa endemik Jawa, misalnya lutung jawa (Trachypithecus auratus), owa jawa (Hylobates moloch), surili (Presbytis comata), macan tutul (Panthera pardus), elang jawa (Spizaetus bartelsi), dan merak (Pavo muticus), akibat hutan yang menjadi habitat mereka rusak.

Direktur Profauna Malang Rosek Nursahid mencontohkan, populasi lutung jawa di Malang Raya saja terus merosot. Sekitar 15 tahun lalu di sekitar Pegunungan Panderman, Batu, ditemukan lebih dari lima kelompok lutung jawa (setiap kelompok terdapat 5 hingga 25 ekor). Kini lutung jawa tidak lagi ditemukan.

Di lokasi lain, lereng timur Gunung Arjuno, 15 tahun lalu Rosek menemukan 7 hingga 10 kelompok lutung jawa. Sekarang jumlahnya tidak lebih dari dua kelompok.

Padahal, lutung jawa merupakan indikator tingkat kerusakan hutan. Lutung jawa dikenal sebagai binatang dengan sensitivitas tinggi, yang hanya bisa hidup di hutan dengan kondisi masih bagus, makanan masih banyak, minim aktivitas manusia, dan masih banyak pohon.

”Lutung jawa jenis binatang arboreal (hidup di atas pohon). Kalau vegetasi sudah rusak, lutung tidak akan bisa bertahan,” katanya. Lutung juga banyak ditangkap untuk dimakan sebagai obat peningkat stamina. (DIA)

October 23rd, 2009, the next day, October 24th, in conjunction with the 'United Nations Day' and 'The International Day of Climate Action', 'The Climate Project Indonesia' will continue the campaign to a larger audience through organizing an event called "350. Berani?!" or "350. Dare?!" in 2 locations. "Teater Utan Kayu" and "Darmawangsa Square" This event is a cooperation between The Climate Project Indonesia, '89,2 FM Green Radio' and 'Life Begins @ 40'.

Why 350? 350 refers to 350 ppm, the save level of atmospheric CO2 concentration. In September 2009, the atmospheric CO2 concentration has reached 384.78 ppm.

3. Discussion with Dorothy Manalu from DNPI and Suzy Hutomo from the Body Shop (Climate Change Campaigner trained by Mr.Al Gore)

- "The Green Lifestyle Clinics". Consult with our 'green' doctors to get tips on how to contribute to the efforts to tackle the climate crisis. Our 'green' doctors are: Dicky Edwin Hindarto (energy efficiency, carbon trading), Suzy Hutomo (green home & green business), Nana Firman (green architecture), Yani Saloh (garden & forestry) and Indra Prakoso (hobby).

- Signing of "Declaration to Secure our Future". This declaration was initiated by Mr. Al Gore with The Climate Project. The signing of this declaration is unique. It is written in a piece of fabric using Batik wax. The participants will sign the declaration with wax using 'canting' (the tool to make Batik). The signed declaration will then be processed to become a piece of Batik. We will send this piece of Batik to Al Gore who will bring it to COP 15 in Copenhagen.
